Aligned with Wigwe University’s policy on student development, a group of students undertook an educational visit to the University Clinic. Their aim was to learn the operational processes and procedures of the clinic, along with the services provided to develop an appreciation of how the health centre contributes to the physical and mental health of the university community.
This tour was a customized unit of the health awareness and orientation programme of the university organized by the Student Affairs Department together with the medical team from University Clinic. The tour was instructional as it enabled the students to appreciate the various operations including clinic activities that are done on a daily basis as well as the services offered and the processes followed in the event of an emergency.
The students were met and welcomed by the CMO and other services who received them at the clinic. The students were taken around the outpatient consultation rooms, the diagnostic laboratory, the pharmacy, the observation rooms, the emergency treatment units, and counseling/mental health support offices.
Clinic staff described how to seek care during a clinic orientation, including the processes of booking an appointment, reporting an emergency, obtaining medication, and utilizing mental health and wellness services. Special emphasis was laid on confidentiality, patient rights, preventive healthcare, and the need to report any symptoms as soon as possible to avoid complications.
One of the most engaging parts of the visit was an interactive Q&A session where students were free to ask questions and voice concerns about how the clinic can better support their health needs. Other topics of interest included stress, sexual and reproductive health, nutrition, and availability of psychological support.
In her address, the CMO highlighted that the University Clinic is more than just a treatment centre; it is a companion in each of the student’s academic journey. “Your greatest asset as a student is your health. This clinic has been established to ensure you remain healthy, informed, and supported all through your stay here,” she noted.
Students noted that the visit to the clinic was helpful and soothing. “It’s comforting to know that we have access to qualified professionals and modern medical facilities right here on campus,” said one student. “Now I know exactly where to go and what to do if I or a friend needs medical help.”
This excursion is part of a broader initiative on the integration of health literacy into campus life. Earlier this month, Wigwe University had student wellness activities, showcasing the university’s commitment to the well-being of its students which is essential for academic pursuits and personal development.
Going forth with the plans, the University Clinic is looking to host and develop additional outreach events, workshops, and health campaigns throughout the academic year with the goal of further engaging students on important health issues.
