The inauguration of Wigwe University at Isiokpo in Rivers State on October 17, 2024, marks a significant milestone for us and education in the region and Nigeria. Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, shared Wigwe University’s ambitious goals, emphasizing Dr. Herbert Wigwe’s founding vision. Al-Akaidi underscored Wigwe University’s mission to set a new standard of academic excellence across Africa, preparing students to tackle future challenges with creativity and resilience. The opening ceremony was graced by Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, represented by Commissioner of Education, Dr. Ovy Obi-Chukwuma, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting Wigwe University. He highlighted the state’s belief in education as a cornerstone of development, expressing hope for the university’s significant impact within the state and beyond.

Professor Emeritus Julius Okojie, the Pro-Chancellor, proudly noted that Wigwe University has “started big,” setting a high standard from the outset. He emphasized the university’s immense potential to contribute to community development in Isiokpo, Rivers State, underscoring its role not just as an academic institution but as a catalyst for positive change in the region.
