The Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of Wigwe University, Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, over the weekend, welcomed Year 12 students and tutors from Mirror International School, Rukpokwu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and others to the university campus.
Professor Al-Akaidi, who was joined by members of the university’s faculty and staff in receiving the visitors, expressed hope that the visit would allow them to experience the Wigwe University community and explore the world-class facilities available for learning.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the school’s leadership for nurturing the students to their current level, describing them as the future of Nigeria. He noted that, with an institution such as Wigwe University, their ambitions and potential would be effectively harnessed.
Addressing the students, Professor Al-Akaidi stated that at the core of the university’s academic drive is a bold and defining vision tagged “We Are the Fearless.” According to him, “Our aim is simple: to give you a genuine sense of our learning environment, our values, and the opportunities we provide to shape confident, capable, and forward-thinking individuals.”
He also acknowledged the presence of some parents at the event, appreciating their trust and commitment to supporting their children’s development by providing access to quality education and a conducive learning environment.
One of the parents, Barrister Rosemary Chikere, applauded the leadership of Wigwe University for creating one of the best learning environments in the country. She noted that the teaching aids, accommodation facilities, cafeteria operations, and emphasis on safety had given her peace of mind regarding her child’s well-being at school.
“Having experienced the university over just one semester as a parent, I have no hesitation in recommending it to my colleagues and other parents who desire a quality academic environment for their wards. It is very reassuring to know that my child can stay close to home and still receive a standard of education comparable to, or even better than, what some institutions outside Nigeria offer,” Barrister Chikere added.
The Principal of Mirror International School, Mr Chia Terseer Christopher, also commended Wigwe University for the warm reception. He noted that their initial impressions from online information had been impressive, prompting the visit to verify the reality.
“We have come, and we can confidently say that what we saw online is not fictitious but real. This experience will help us guide our students in envisioning a future at the university,” he said.
The visitors were later taken on a guided tour of the university’s facilities and interacted with deans of colleges and other staff members during the visit.
