Wigwe University Faculty Member Champions Women’s Empowerment, Community Service, Civic Development in Imo State

In an accurate display of the values of the late Dr Herbert Wigwe, founder of Wigwe University, of leading through service and remaining engaged, a faculty member of the General Studies Division of the University, Dr Stella O. Onyeagbako, has rallied the women of Okwu Uratta in Owerri North Local Government of Imo State to erect a Community Hall to serve as a civic centre for the people.

Dr Onyeagbako, who served as the President-General of the women’s wing Okwu Uratta Development Union (OUDU)in her hometown, said she was intentional about creating a place where the people can converge to discuss issues that bother on the development of the town, which necessitated her championing the construction of the hall.

Drawing from the values of the institution to which she belongs, Dr Onyeagbako’s tenure witnessed the empowerment of 91 women traders with nonrefundable loans to make them productive members of society. “My goal is to ensure that at least 100 women are empowered to become self-reliant during my leadership,” she enthused.

The commissioning of the community civic centre attracted the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Her Excellency, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, and the President, Customary Court of Appeal, Imo State, Hon. Justice Victor Uchenna Okorie, amongst many other dignitaries.

This beautiful gesture earned Dr Onyeagbako the University management’s commendation for not restricting herself to teaching and research only, but also engaging in community development projects.
