I am an associate professor of accounting and currently work at the Open University UK, teaching accounting modules. Previously, at Queen’s University Belfast and Aston University, I taught financial accounting, CSR, sustainability, and research design modules as a module leader. I have contributed to the delivery and management of various accounting and finance courses. I have developed modules using keypath (online teaching) technologies, offering online courses that reach a wider audience. I have also served as a programme director for the MSc Accounting and Finance degree at Aston Business School. In this role, I have conscientiously overseen and enhanced the MSc programme by introducing new modules and assessment methods, and provided the department with leadership, direction, and support to improve the student experience. In addition, I have worked closely with accounting bodies such as the ACCA and CIMA to maintain our existing and new accreditations and exemptions, bringing excellence to our degree programmes.
In addition to my teaching, I consider myself to be an active researcher engaged in high-quality research. My interdisciplinary research is explicitly influenced by critical theorising, focusing on social accounting, financial reporting, and critical accounting. This approach examines accounting, culture, diversity, language, and power, particularly in relation to religious organisations and NGOs. My research is grounded in broader social theories, allowing for multiple approaches to analysis. These include multidimensional and intersecting aspects of social identity that contribute to the construction of narratives. I have published papers in high-quality journals and shared the findings of my work with relevant bodies to promote cooperation and reduce tensions among scholars, financial institutions, and the public on various issues.
My published and future work highlights my research ethos. This ethos builds on empowering and impacting disadvantaged communities by establishing social equality through critical perspectives. My research philosophy’s ontological and epistemological stances fall towards nominalism and anti-positivism. My research aligns with my teaching; for instance, my paper on auditors’ perspectives on financial fraud connects with the topic of earnings management, which I teach in my accounting course. The paper on the relationship between U.K. universities and professional accounting bodies promotes my teaching and scholarship activities. My other work on critical and Islamic accounting has garnered significant international attention, for which I have received positive feedback. I have shared my findings from this research with relevant institutions and scholars to enrich their perceptions.
For my external engagement, I have attended research conferences and events to expand my research network and collaborate with colleagues on future research projects. One of my published book chapters on embedding CSR into teaching has been found by colleagues from other universities to help incorporate this into their teaching curriculum. I am an associate editor for qualitative research in financial markets and have been serving as an editorial board member for several journals. I have supervised three PhD students to successful completion, served as an internal and external examiner for PhD viva voce examinations, and been invited to programme reviews at several universities, which has provided me with excellent curriculum design and leadership skills. For my personal development, I have taken several training courses, including gaining membership in SFHEA, and have attended several teaching workshops to become an inspiring academic.
