In a significant demonstration of its commitment to advancing research excellence and innovation, Wigwe University participated in the Research Capacity Development Training Programme organized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) at its headquarters in Abuja between May 12 and 13, 2026.
The University’s delegation was led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, and included the Director of Academic Affairs, Quality Assurance and Academic Standards, Professor Chinyere Ukaga, as well as the Dean of the College of Science and Computing and Director of Research, Professor Kingsley Ukaoha.
The two-day training programme brought together academic leaders, researchers, and policymakers from universities across Nigeria to explore strategies for strengthening institutional research capacity, enhancing grant acquisition and management, and increasing the impact of research on national development.

Participation in the programme reflects Wigwe University’s strategic vision of positioning itself as a leading research-driven institution committed to producing innovative solutions to contemporary challenges through high-quality scholarship and collaborative partnerships.
The Research Capacity Development Training Programme was designed to equip higher education institutions with the knowledge, tools, and frameworks required to build
sustainable research ecosystems. Discussions centered on best practices in research governance, funding opportunities, project management, institutional collaborations, and the translation of research outcomes into societal impact.
Throughout the sessions, participants engaged in robust conversations on the evolving role of universities in driving innovation, economic growth, and evidence-based policymaking. Emphasis was placed on developing institutional structures that support researchers in securing competitive grants and conducting impactful studies that address national and global priorities.

Representing Wigwe University, the delegation actively contributed to discussions on strengthening Nigeria’s research landscape and creating opportunities for meaningful collaboration among universities, government agencies, industry stakeholders, and international partners.
The University’s representatives highlighted the importance of empowering institutions to build strategic partnerships capable of accelerating knowledge creation and promoting sustainable development through research.
