Wigwe University Earns PAP Endorsement, Set to Receive More Niger-Delta Scholars
The Vice-Chancellor of Wigwe University, Isiokpo, Rivers State, Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, has commended the leadership of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) for selecting the institution as a partner in training a critical mass of university education seekers from the Niger Delta region.
The commendation came as a 15-member PAP delegation, led by Dr Charles Ariye, visited the university as part of its routine students audit and evaluation of the academic performance of beneficiaries under the programme’s scholarship scheme.
Speaking during the visit, Dr Ariye noted that Wigwe University’s academic environment stands out, drawing from his experience studying abroad. He described the campus as uniquely designed to nurture young scholars and stimulate a strong desire for learning.
He added that the delegation’s second visit had reaffirmed the positive impressions recorded during its initial assessment. Consequently, he disclosed that the university would receive more beneficiaries under the PAP scholarship scheme when the 2026/2027 admission exercise begins.
“Wigwe University is gaining recognition, and interest in the institution is growing. We seek a partnership that will provide young people in the Niger Delta with the best educational opportunities available in the country,” Ariye said. “I want to assure the university’s leadership that it will receive more PAP-sponsored students as we work together to realize the vision of the late Herbert Wigwe.”
Dr Ariye further stated that the partnership would be strengthened, expressing hope that the university would expand its offerings to include programmes in environmental sciences and medical-related fields, which are in high demand among PAP beneficiaries.
During the visit, the delegation also held an interactive session with over 120 Wigwe University students benefiting from the PAP scholarship scheme.
