Leadership of Wigwe University Sets Academic, Ethical Tone for New Students

The Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of Wigwe University, Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, has charged the freshmen class of 2025 to start their academic Journey with confidence, embracing the challenges and celebrating the victory that comes with it.
Professor Al-Akaidi, who gave the charge during the orientation programme for the new students, reminded them of the hard work that has brought them thus far, and reiterated the need to maintain the same dedication if they desire to make the most of their studentship at the university.
According to him, “You have worked hard to be here, and you belong here. You are stepping into a community of learning, innovation, creativity, and leadership, as this is the place where you will build your dreams, sharpen your talents and shape the next chapter of your lives.”
Similarly, the Deputy Registrar of the University, Mr Moses Ituam, took time to introduce the students to the leadership structure of Wigwe University, with the intent of helping them know and understand who to approach for academic and administrative matters.
Mr Ituama reminded the freshmen class of 2025 to be mindful of the values the university represents, and the need for them to be imbued as a way of life, noting that excellence, sustainability, entrepreneurship, innovation, and social responsibility must begin to find expression in their day-to-day pursuits.
The Director, Academic Planning Unit and Quality Assurance, Professor Chinyere Ukaga, gave a detailed breakdown of the University grading system, academic expectations of students, and the assessment system. In her presentation, she harped on the semester and course credit system of the university, irrespective of programmes and colleges.
Professor Ukaga highlighted the importance of students knowing and understanding the calculation of the Grade Point Average (GPA) and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), which, according to her, could motivate each one to do the required work needed to come up with good grades at the end of each semester.
“Wigwe University places utmost importance on academic honesty among its students. Integrity in academic endeavours is fundamental, reflecting the principles of fairness and personal accountability embedded in the University’s mission and vision; as such, our students are expected to refrain from plagiarism, cheating, and collusion during examinations and projects. Proper acknowledgement of all sources and received assistance is mandatory for all submitted work,” she concluded.
Mr Ndukwe Eke, a staff member of the University Library, encouraged the students to take advantage of the rich resources of the university library, noting that the unit is well equipped to support their learning and research endeavours.

Mr. Eke used the occasion to guide users to the available mechanism to locate books through the university’s LMS. Furthermore, he introduced key electronic databases—EBSCOhost, JSTOR, and Research4Life—while reinforcing essential library rules for maintaining a conducive study environment.
The Head of University GST Unit, Dr. Stella Onyeagbako, speaking on dress codes on campus, said the ‘We, the Fearless’ is not just a motto or slogan of the University, but a way of life for all, and as students, how they dress is vital to showing responsibility and fearless traits.
Dr Onyeagbako opined that it was important that all students embrace the culture of smart casual on campus, that is, dressing to be comfortable enough to focus on learning, formal enough to show modesty, at the same time conveying respect for oneself and the university.
“Dressing well is not about following every trend; it’s about showing pride in yourself and in our university community. Your dress code should say: I belong here, I am ready, I am responsible, and I am fearless.”
“As you start this exciting journey, let your style reflect your courage, your focus, and your professionalism. Step into every lecture, every hall, and every event with pride, purpose, and a fearless attitude,” she enthused.
The session also witnessed a presentation from the Dean of Students’ Affairs, the medical team, the Head of Campus Security, and the Head of the ICT Unit.
